You better get the tissues handy, because this story is bound to bring on the waterworks. On the night before Valentine’s Day, a 12-year-old boy in Mexico made the heartbreaking decision to hand over his best friend – a beautiful blue pit bull puppy. And the reason why is both touching and absolutely devastating.

On the morning of Valentine’s Day, workers at the Refugio Xollin animal rescue and shelter arrived to see a cardboard box sitting on the doorstep. Inside was the puppy, along with a handwritten note from the boy. This is the translation in English:

“My name is Andrés and I’m 12 years old. My mom and I decided to leave him to you. All of this is behind my dad’s back, because he was thinking of selling him. But he is always beating and kicking the dog. Once, he kicked him so hard that his little tail got injured. I hope you can help him and take care of him. Here is a plush toy so he won’t forget me.”

Because Andrés made the difficult yet important decision to protect his dog from his abusive father, the puppy (who now goes by the name Rene) is in safe, loving hands. Refugio Xollin explained that their first priorities were treating the puppy’s fractured tail, deworming him, and doing a general health checkup.

Since the rescue group shared the story, it went completely viral, with over 300 people filling out adoption requests for Rene, as well as the other 120+ rescue animals the shelter is currently caring for. This bittersweet story exemplifies the love a little boy has for his puppy, and the selflessness that even a 12-year-old can show in the face of adversity. Thank you to Refugio Xollin for saving this puppy – and many, many other animals in need. And remember, adopt – don’t shop!
